ENSURING FORKLIFT AND ELECTRICAL SAFETY

To ensure the safety of everyone in the workplace, it’s important to always operate forklifts responsibly

Ensuring Forklift Safety

Forklifts (also called lift trucks) can be used to perform essential tasks in the workplace, but they are also quite dangerous. Driving a forklift is a serious responsibility and should not be taken lightly. Forklift drivers must be properly trained and follow all necessary safety procedures and precautions. If you are responsible for operating a forklift on-site, here are some basic safety practices to observe:

• Make sure your driving path is clear at all times. Always give those on foot the right of way.
• Slow down for corners, blind spots and doorways. Never try to turn on an incline.
• Drive defensively by always being aware of your surroundings and watching for hazards.
• Reduce your speed on uneven floors and surfaces.
• Keep your legs, arms, feet, hands and head inside the forklift while driving.
• Never stand under or pass beneath raised forks, whether loaded or empty.
• Never use the forklift for anything other than your specified job tasks.
• Avoid giving anyone a ride or allowing anyone who is untrained to operate the forklift. For more forklift safety guidance, talk to your supervisor.

Avoiding Electrical Shock

As you go about your work tasks that involve portable electric tools (eg drills, saws, sanders and grinders), electrical sockets or wiring, you may not give much thought about the hazards electricity can pose. Yet, it’s vital to take the proper safety precautions to avoid an electrical shock—a potentially life-threatening injury resulting from direct contact with a high-voltage source. Electrical Shock Explained According to the HSE, a voltage as low as 50 volts applied between two body parts creates a current flow that can block the electrical signals between the brain and muscles. The effect on the body varies and is dependent on a range of factors, including which body parts are involved, how damp the person is, how long the shock lasts and how strong the current is. Broadly, electrical shock can result in burns, muscle contractions, seizures, loss of consciousness and—in severe cases—cardiac arrest.
Electrical Safety Measures

A key factor in preventing electrical shocks is maintaining portable electric tools. As such, always examine tools for these conditions:
• Defective or broken insulation
• Improper or poorly made connections to terminals
• Broken or otherwise defective plugs
• Loose or broken switches
• Sparking brushes If any of these conditions exist, have the tool repaired, report it to your supervisor and—above all—do not use it.

In addition to inspecting portable electric tools, make sure you follow these measures:
• Do not use frayed wiring or sockets with burn marks, cracked casing or sparks coming off them.
• Refrain from repairing or adjusting portable electric tools while they are plugged in.
• Do not use portable electric tools in the presence of flammable vapours or gases (unless they are designed for such use).
• Keep portable electric tools, plugs and wiring away from water and damp surfaces at all times. Never touch these items with wet hands.
• Use the required personal protective equipment for all electrical tasks, even if it may seem unnecessary. If you or a colleague receives an electrical shock, it’s crucial to seek immediate medical attention. Even if the victim does not exhibit signs of injury or harm, internal injuries may have resulted from the shock. Contact your supervisor for more information on electrical safety
