Calls for new legislation to tackle self driving vehicle safety
The widespread adoption of self driving vehicles has the potential to revolutionise the motor sector, but its implementation is not without significant safety concerns. By 2035, 40% of new cars in the UK could have self driving capabilities according to government predictions. Last year, the government set out its vision for self driving vehicles, backed by £100 million in funding. However a new report by the Transport Committee is calling for the governments framework to be expanded and formally set out in legislation, citing that current laws for self driving vehicles are “ archaic and limiting”.
According to the transport committee, the current framework falls down in several areas, including:
- Driving standards Drivers may become less practised and skilled over time as automation increases. This could create difficulties should drivers need to take manual control of their vehicles in challenging scenarios.
- Cyber security Self driving vehicles connected capabilities could create significant cyber security vulnerabilities.
- Safety concerns The complexities of self driving vehicles mean that more may be likely to go wrong and issues could be more difficult to fix than those in conventional vehicles.
- Infrastructure Self driving vehicles will rely on well maintained roads, signage and nationwide connectivity, infrastructure that’s not currently in place.
- Legal liability The complexity of the legal liability between vehicle owners and vehicle software operators could have implications for the insurance industry.
Overall, the Transport Committee’s report calls on the government to implement more comprehensive legislation in relation to safe driving vehicles safety. As such organisations in the motor trade and the sector as a whole should stay abreast of any challenging legislation, especially as it pertains to manufacturing processes, quality control and testing.
